About Balanced Organics
Hello!
My name is Lily. I am deeply passionate about supporting others to find balance in all facets of their lives. This support is rooted in a combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine and science. My purpose in life is to bridge the gap between the two and help people see how beautifully these two modalities can merge together as the foundation for radiant vitality.
My journey in this space began when I initially started struggling with my health as a teenager. Over the years I found myself constantly faced with some medical anomaly and symptoms ranging from cystic acne, rashes, anxiety/depression and severe gut dysbiosis to chronic pain and even lyme disease. After years of being told the only solution was medications and that what I ate and the products I used had no impact on my wellbeing, I finally broke out of this narrative and found my way back to vibrant health. In helping myself, my passion for helping others was born and Balanced Organics came shortly after.
FAQs
Why are the moisturizers tallow based instead of plant based?
Using an animal based product for moisturizers compliments our skin to a much greater degree than a plant or chemical based moisturizer could. This is because we, as humans, have a very similar acid profile to animals !
Tallow is naturall rich in vitamins A, D, E and K (vitamin E prevents breakdown of collagen & protects skin cells from damaging UV light), high in oleic acid (easily penetrates the dermis to replenish lost moisture and stops additional transepidermal water loss), and contains palmitic acid (this acid can decrease up to 50% with aging!).
How are the body scrubs intended to be used? Can I use it on face and body?
All 3 of our scrubs for sale are safe to use on your body. Both the coffee and sweet heart scrub are also safe to use on your face as it is a much simpler ingredient profile. If you are someone with more reactive skin, we advise to only use the coffee scrub on your face; however, all three will be safe for your body.
All scrubs on our site can be used to wash your armpits, arms, legs, back, and feet. We love to use the scrubs before shaving to exfoliate the dead skill cells away. Scrub your legs, rinse the scrub off, then shave! You will get a smoother shave and be left with moisturized skin.
When using on your face, use at most 2x daily. Start with a 3x a week and build your way to using it more or less frequently, depending on what your skin needs. The coffee scrub specifically is a great pick me up to use in the morning to brighten your skin. Our founder has learned what works best for her is rinsing her skin with luke warm to chilly water in the morning and moisturizing with any of our lotions and then at night using a scrub to cleanse the dirt and sweat off from the day. On long work days, she will use the coffee scrub in the morning and night !
What other oils does Balanced choose NOT to use that are commonly found cosmetics?
Rancid seed oils ! This is not up for debate in our opinion. Sunflower oil, grapeseed oil, canola oil, corn oil, etc. We do not believe in ingesting these oils as part of our diet, so we certainly will not put them on our skin to be absorbed.
Industrial processed seed oils start as plants and they are pressed and come out like gum. They are then de-gummed using hexane, a neurotoxin. This de-gummed neurotoxic oil is then heated to 405 degrees, which makes the oil rancid. Rancid oils smell horrible, so it is then deodorized with sodium chloride (carcinogen) and next, it is clarified to reduce cloudiness by bleaching it with chlorine. These oils are widely used because they are cheaper; however, what is initially cheap up front often costs your health in the long term.
Many of our products are inspired by people in our community and families that struggle with their skin. Many of these people experience rashes/dematitis, eczema, and acne breakouts whenever they would use a product with these oils. There are beautiful, clean and nourishing oils readily available to us for our products- it's a no brainer for us to use these !
I left my tallow outside / in my car / etc. and it melted ! What do I do?
Don't worry and don't toss that tallow! Place it in the fridge or somewhere dry and cool, allow to firm. Tallow has a smoke point of 374 degrees so you don't need to worry about it going bad. The tallow will still work the same, it just won't be whipped.
Why use zinc instead of titanium dioxide in the sunblock?
The International Agency for Research on Cancer has designated titanium dioxide as a carcinogen and using carcinogenic ingredients in our products is vehemently against our intentions for creating clean cosmetics.
ZInc is also stable in the presence of sunlight and does not permeate the skin, rather it simply scatters UV rays.
What unsafe ingredients are used in other sunblocks that led Balanced to creating their own?
As mentioned above, titanium dioxide is often found in spf moisturizers and sunblocks (as well as many other cosmetics) and is an ingredient we will ALWAYS avoid.
The sunscreens on shelves that cause the most concern are chemical based sunscreens. According to the EWG, "[chemical sunscreens] combine three to six of these active ingredients: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate. The most problematic sunscreen chemical used in the U.S. is oxybenzone, found in 80 percent of chemical sunscreens. EWG recommends that consumers avoid oxybenzone because it can penetrate the skin, cause allergic skin reactions and may disrupt hormones."
The EWG also advises against using Vitamin A (labelled retinyl palmitate). This is found in nearly 25% of all sunscreens sold. Federal studies concluded that it may speed the development of skin tumors and lesions on skin exposed to sunlight.
Will there be a sunblock with an SPF higher than 30?
No, there will not be a sunblock with an SPF higher than 30. SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays. SPF 50 blocks 98% and SPF 100 blocks about 99.1%. This very minimal increase in blocked rays would not only cost more to make, but also more to buy as the consumer for very little increase in efficacy.
Should I use sunblock every morning ?
There are many influencers and dermatologists who insist you must wear sunscreen every day to protect from the sun.
We believe the sun is here to help us ! It is important to get direct skin exposure to the sun without clothing, sunglasses, or sunblocks in order to maintain mitochondrial health and to effectively process plant foods (fruits and vegetables). Sun exposure is protective against all-cause mortality, CVD, multiple types of cancer, and mental health diseases. (check out dralexisjazmyn on instagram for some incredible insight on sunlight for our health)
Our tallow based moisturizers have an inherent SPF of about 5-8 because tallow itself, as well as most oils and butters, have their own naturally existing sun protecting properties. We advise using the love & light blend or calming cream as your daily moisturizer.
The sunblock is great for those days you will be in the sun for long / extended periods of time, for water activities such as surfing, swimming, diving, and fishing, or in the summer when you will be out in peak sun hours for more than 30-40 minutes. However, all our products are safe for daily use and if using a sunblock daily in the morning serves you best then we support that and trust that our formulation will guarantee satisfaction.
Is sunscreen different than sunblock?
Yes, sunscreen and sunblock are different! Sunscreen uses organic and inorganic chemicals to filter and prevent the suns rays from penetrating deep layers of the skin. Sunblock, uses a mineral filter (zinc), that scatters and reflects the sun rays. Sunblock effectively prevents the rays from even reaching the skin, acting as a barrier.
